The Dutch made us different. Have you ever wondered what New York was like before it was a city? "Dutch New York" is produced to honor the 400th anniversary of explorer Henry Hudson's voyage to New York State and the river that bears his name. As we celebrate the anniversary of the voyage, historian Barry Lewis takes us back in time to rediscover the first European settlers in New York — the Dutch. The Dutch colony was resulted from Henry Hudson's voyage, and this hour long documentary tells the story of Dutch New Amsterdam, the city that became New York, and the Hudson River Valley colony of New Netherland. The 40 or so years of Dutch settlement made the future New York different from the other original thirteen colonies. The old Dutch influence still echoes across contemporary American life, especially true in the region the Dutch once called home: the architecture, language and culture of New Netherland influences New York today, even if most modern-day inhabitants have little idea of the history beneath their feet. "Boston and Philadelphia…they were English. We were New Amsterdam; we were Dutch". This documentary looks at the Dutch influence on New York and on the American colonies. Scholars interviewed include Eric Sanderson ("Manahatta"), Joyce Goodfriend, Dr. Charles Gehring and Wm. T. Chip Reynolds, Captain of the newly re-built Half-Moon. Channel Thirteen (WNET) Production
