[edit] Information
The film follows the lives of five "hafus" the Japanese term for people who are half-Japanese as they explore what it means to be multiracial and multicultural in a nation that once proudly proclaimed itself as the mono-ethnic nation. For some of these hafus, Japan is the only home they know. For others, living in Japan is an entirely new experience. There are also those caught somewhere between these two different worlds. Until about two decades ago hafu (meaning half-Japanese) were viewed with a mixture of awe, envy, a bit of suspicion and a barrage of other emotions, some positive and some not. Now, mixed-race people are no longer that rare, and Japan has become more open about the whole thing. But have things really improved? Megumi Nishikura and Lara Perez Takagis documentary Hafu takes the bull by the horns and the results are intriguing.
